I found a new product at my local Bernina shop and wanted to try it. It’s called Kraft-Tex, Kraft Paper Fabric. Here is the description from the package:
You’ll love this rugged paper that looks and feels like leather, but sews, cuts and washes just like fabric. kraft-tex™ is supple, yet strong enough to use for projects that get tough wear. Use it to bring an exciting new texture to your craft-sewing projects, mixed-media arts and bookmaking.
It is really fun and easy to work with. I found a pair of funky jeans at my local Goodwill for .99 and thought these jeans would be a great project to play with. Since my mind always goes in the tote bag direction, I decided to make a tote (No surprise here!)
I used a couple of decorative stitches on my sewing machine to make it a bit more interesting. It sewed perfectly and I used a size 70 needle because I wanted to keep the holes as small as I could get them. I didn’t have any broken threads or skipped stitches. This Paper Fabric feels just like its name, a little bit paper and a little bit leathery fabric. The more you play with it the more worn in looking it gets. The package says that it is machine wash and machine dry, but I haven’t tried that yet. I think it will look really weathered when I do wash it. The product is put out by C&T Publishing and can be found on-line by “googling” kraft-tex kraft paper fabric. or your local quilt shop. The package I bought is 18″ wide by 1-1/2 yards long and it was $12.95.
